You can hear people all the time telling why they want to get successful, how will they do it and so on. But have you ever tried to realize what exactly they mean by getting successful in life? Is this a common idea for everyone? Is it as simple as it sounds or Is there anything more to it?
First, its not a motivational blog, neither does it meant to inspire you. Think of it as a kind of software where you put your ‘idea of success’ as an input value. At the end of the blog, you should be able to judge your idea of success. You should be able to determine if it’s the right way you are heading or Is it worth putting all these efforts into?
Nonetheless, I’m sure you’ll have a decent resolve and a firm conviction in your future actions after getting the true essence of this article.
So, are you passionate about something? Something that you can pick as your long-term career option? Do you feel like there is something that you can do better than everyone?
Maybe it is coding, singing, writing, convincing and managing people, designing or playing with machines and stuff. There has to be something you must feel doing it for the rest of your life. If there isn’t, that means you are not looking hard enough.
Do, you think that reaching a prestigious position in that field or skill that you feel passionate about, can be referred to as success?
I can’t see anything wrong with that.
If you are a software engineer and with your hard work and dedication, one day you reach the position of CTO or CEO, that should be counted as a success, isn’t it? Maybe you have set higher goals, you want to own that company one day and many others.
Similarly, you could be a government employee or a shopkeeper or a farmer or a politician. In every case you’ll have a goal that you wish to achieve someday. When you finally achieve it one day, you can call yourself successful by the general idea of success.
So, Is this that simple?
Well, there is another side to it. This side is more humane than ‘all business’.
Now for a second, assume that you have achieved all your goals and the satisfaction that comes with it. Assume that you are successful, and at that time, answer a simple question, Are you a good person?
A good person is tender-hearted, humble, mostly truthful, honest and respectful to differences.
Are you all that? Do these qualities have grown in you as you progressed towards success? Are you a better person than before?
This thing matters the most because otherwise you are just successful in a trade and that’s an incomplete success. If you don’t consider yourself a good person based on the qualities I mentioned, then you can not be a “successful person”. You may call yourself, a successful engineer, businessman, politician, entrepreneur, actor or farmer, but not a successful person.
Because before you became an engineer or a businessman, you were a person, a human.
A person can be passionate about spreading hate and killing people. He may achieve a big feat in that. One day, he may be recognized as a Mass murder. Will you call him successful? Because by the general idea of success, he is.
But he’s not a good person, that’s out of the question. So what makes a person successful?
A person is successful if he is good, and by the goodness of his heart, he has achieved the admiration and respect of people around him.
So, even after putting all the efforts, you still failed to achieve your desired goals, but you are a good person, you will still be a successful human. That’s far better than a dishonest CEO or a corrupt leader of a trade or a stiff-necked expert in a certain field.
When you achieve your justified goals by walking the tough path of honesty, kindness and self-respect, you become an inspiration.
You will not be called just a successful person, but a great man, who will be followed by the generations to come.
So you see, now you can judge the path you’re walking.
Do you know what is the secret to becoming a successful person? Well, you just need the right kind and the right amount of stubbornness in you. Does that make sense..?
All these qualities that people won’t tire telling about, qualities like being a team player, hardworking, smart working, convincing, self-motivated, solution-oriented etc. are secondary.
Its like, when you do Aarti of Lord Ganesh at the end of your Pooja, you put all kinds of offerings in your Aarti ki Thaali, but if you don’t feel devoted & faithful to the God, it means nothing to him.
Remember this always, only you could be the judge of your success not the society. Because only you know your true nature whether you are a good person or just pretending to be one. You can fool everyone and even yourself, but not for long.
We are all people. There is no god walking among us, alien may be. Our first goal should be to try to be a good human. Everything comes after.
